Surf shop to purchase former Seaside library building

Volume 4: Issue 9 - 09/01/2009

By Nick Bjork

The Seaside City Council recently agreed in principle to sell its former library building, located at 60 N. Roosevelt Dr., to Cleanline Surf Shop, a Seaside-based surf shop that has been in business for over twenty years.

Cleanline will pay the city $509,000 for the building, of which $409,000 will be in cash and $100,000 in the value of equipment to be donated to the city’s lifeguard department.

The surf shop owners must also receive approval of a zoning change to allow commercial use of the property, and a highway access permit from the Oregon Department of Transportation for adding an entrance to U.S. Highway 101 from the property should they choose to do so.

The Seaside Library moved in September 2008 to a new location at 1131 Broadway St. The old building has been vacant since that time. Although the building is valued at $625,000, city officials said they were pleased with the final price considering the state of the economy.

The cash from the purchase will go to paying debt on the new library building. Any remaining funds will be put in a library trust fund.
