A Pacific City business is launching a campaign to raise funds for a facility that will help provide a safe home for the pets of women escaping domestic violence.
The Dapper Frog has announced it will lead a campaign to help My Sisters’ Place, a nonprofit organization serving victims of domestic violence, build the first domestic violence pet shelter on the Oregon coast, at its Lincoln County facility.
At present, there are only two other domestic violence shelters in Oregon able to accept pets – North Bend, Ore. and Roseburg, Ore. – with another planned in Hood River, Ore.
John McDonnell, owner of The Dapper Frog, said his commitment to the project reflects his love of animals.
"My wife, Gail, and I have long supported animal-care projects," he said. "We are extremely impressed with the thought and planning that has gone into this shelter. It will be an excellent facility that will help ensure that families escaping violence can keep their pets with them for comfort as they transition to a better life."
McDonnell said he will kick off the campaign immediately. The Dapper Frog will guarantee a minimum contribution of $10,000 over the next year and offer any customer an opportunity to donate to the project.
The 408 sq. ft. pet shelter will house up to four dogs, a large number of cats and other small animals. Construction costs are estimated to be between $40,000 and $50,000
