Cathlamet vintage store holds grand re-opening

Volume 4: Issue 4 - 04/01/2009

Howie Corner Old & New, located in Cathlamet at 98 Main St., recently held a grand re-opening after under-going some extensive changes.

The store has expanded its hours and developed into a co-op style store. The store fuses elements of an antique store with a thrift shop.

"We wanted to create a place that was a mixed bag of things. Something vintage, funky and unique," said Mark Howie, co-owner of Howie Corner with his wife, Debra Howie. "We also wanted to make sure that there is something for everybody."

In order to do so, four vendors, including the owners, stock the cozy 700 sq. ft. store with everything from homemade jewelry to vintage musical instruments. New products arrive every two weeks. All of the new vendors are from Wahkiakum County. Each specializes in a different area in order to offer a wide array of products.

"We have one local gal that makes furniture out of recycled wood. She will make these cool tables out of old doors," said Howie. "Another woman had her own boutique but has decided to sell her jewelry and clothes out of our store."

Although Howie Corner has a lot of different things, they have been specializing in funky furniture and nautical-related antiques.

"A lot of boaters come through Cathlamet so we have always tried to keep things around that they would like," he said. "We recently had an item from an old boat that was so popular there was literally a race between customers to see who got it first.

Other items include vintage appliances, some new furniture items, and several fun decorations for the house.

Howie Corner had been in business for three years before undergoing this renovation. The new hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Expanded hours are planned for the summer, beginning in late May.
